Job Description

• An interpreter has to be able to translate in both directions, without the use of any dictionaries, on the spot.
• Simultaneous interpreters need speed; consecutive interpreters need a good memory. Both need accuracy.
• Communicates potential interpretation issues/concerns to provider(s) and Project Manager.
• Knowledge of the general subject/topic of the speeches that are to be interpreted.
• Assists with rescheduling and cancellations, if needed.
• General erudition and intimate familiarity with both cultures.
• Ability to express thoughts clearly and concisely in both native and English.
• Excellent note-taking technique for consecutive interpreting.
• Must maintain the confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information. Must be able to serve a diverse population in a fast paced, stressful environment with frequent changes in schedule and circumstances.
• Ability to balance strong organizational skills with sensitivity and diplomacy.
• Abides by organization and department standards as well as the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent. Continuing education and/or training or Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred.
• For Medical Interpreter: Certification or screening assessment by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) as a Medical Interpreter, or equivalent (CCHI test, MITI test, Pacific Interpreter or Language Line Medical Interpreter Skills & Language Assessment, or completion of equivalent evaluation process determined to be acceptable by the Linguistic Services Manager), required.
• Requires 1-3 or more years of training/experience in consecutive/simultaneous interpretation.
• Good knowledge of specialized industry (ie: law, medical, technology, etc.).
• Requires good native and English language skills, including reading, writing, interpreting (consecutive/simultaneous).
• Must be a Washington State resident.
